The Professional Science Masters (PSM) degree is a graduate degree awarded by universities in the United States, Canada and the U.K. As of August 2010, there were over 200 recognized PSM programs being offered by 100 universities.[1]

PSM degree programs are designed to allow students to pursue advanced training in science or mathematics while developing workplace skills valued by employers. Schools offering PSM programs assert that they produce well-rounded science professionals who have a deep knowledge of their subject but also have the ability to communicate effectively and manage projects.[2]
Intended as an alternative to research-focused doctoral programs[3], PSM programs normally consist of two years of study in a designated science or mathematics discipline, but also contain a professional component that provides a fundamental education in professional fields such as communications, policy, business or law.
The National Science Foundation's "Science and Engineering Indicators 2010" provides a brief summary of the PSM and its rapid growth.[4]
A 2008 report from the National Research Council recommended that PSM programs could boost U.S. national competitiveness and should be expanded.[5]
